Motley Owls Up for Grabs!

These owls are handmade by my friend Erin Prais-Hintz of Simple Truths- a line of metal and polymer components that are hand-stamped, colored, and sealed. Each one is completely different and has it’s own personality!  She sent me one too! This guy looks pretty cool but his eyes show he’s shady as ever. I love it!

They were inspired by some artwork by the ever-talented Cori Dantini like this guy, Brutus….

Erin says:  “I know that owls are supposed to be associated with stately wisdom, but I can’t help but think that even in the owl kingdom there must be some fools in there somewhere. You know the sort… the ones with brightly dappled party-colored feathers, who call attention to themselves and steal the show looking for a laugh with their foolishness… they wink their eyes at their more somber cousins and pull all sorts of owlish pranks with a hint of a smile on their beaks, like leaving a fake dead mouse in the ditch or sneaking up behind and making loud noises to scare their more serious brethren out of the tree.

These Motley Owls are a rowdy bunch with fantasy colored feathers in bright oranges, greens, reds, yellows, blues and purples, with feathers that stick out in all directions and their signature yellow eyes ever watchful for an opportunity to clown around. They are not what you would expect but will be a fun friend to have around!”

Erin has donated these owl pendants for my next blog challenge… I am giving away 5 :: (FIVE) :: Cinco- see photo above!  Please leave one comment on this post to enter yourself to win. I will pick 5 random entries TUESDAY APRIL 24th! Please do not leave anonymous comments, and make sure to include an email so that I can reach you.

We will then each create something with our owls and show them off on our blogs in a little mini blog hop on May 16th.

Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor. 🙂

Getting back to Normal

I am slowly getting back to normal after a week away from the studio and the whole blog issues… I liked that funky template but some people couldn’t see it. I hate the idea that long time followers would come and not see posts or dislike the changes. Here we are at a more traditional template but this has got me thinking about Blogger. I fought with it all morning. It doesn’t work in Firefox. And is still glitchy in Safari.  SO I am researching other venues such as wordpress… and typepad.
Maybe I could actually get that “lorelei” feel to my blog for once. I’ve never really felt attached to the blog designs I’ve had. Ahh well. It’s Sunday and this should not consume my whole day so I am heading up to the studio to play around with beads.  I suppose I should clean my house later. The floors are pretty disgusting, and the bathrooms are bad too. I’d be in big trouble if someone decided to “drop by” unexpectedly. That never happens but you never know.

Wrapped, Stacked & Layered Bracelets Blog Hop

Welcome to my blog! I am so excited to hop around all the posts today showing off everyone’s Wrapped and Stacked bracelets. I am amazed at all the participants! It’s exciting! This just goes to show that this style is really HOT right now! I saw a few posts this morning in my blog reader feed and was floored at some of the talent out there. I know this hop will be inspiring for me!

Here is my bracelet set. I created a 4 bracelet set with 2 seed beaded bangles, 1 memory thread wrapped bangle with Ceramic button, and a macrame Waxed linen and brass beaded bracelet.

Here are some details on each bangle….
Each are quite simple but when worn together, pack a bigger punch.

This was such a fun project. I love mixing materials and adding lots of different textures and elements. This was my first project, back in the studio, after a week of being away. I really missed being in that room and being creative.

Thank you Tracy for coordinating and hosting this blog hop! It was a creative idea and I am so inspired!

 Happy Hopping!

Friday Randoms

I finished a book this week! I read The Hunger Games. It was amazing. I loved every minute of it.
Joe is taking me to see the movie on Saturday night.  And I’ll be starting the second in the trilogy as early as today, borrowing it from my friend Theresa.
I now know what all the excitement was over. The story of Katniss in these brutal hunger games was thrilling, and the romance angle was my favorite. I have always been a big fan of teen lit. This is no exception- excited to read the next one.

* I received my beads from Nan of Spirited Earth for Lori Anderson’s Cup of Bead Soup hop. Be sure to check back in on the hop day: May 12!

* I received my buttons for the Button Swap that Cindy Wimmer is hosting, from my partner Liz DeLuca! She sent some lovely handmade lampwork glass buttons….

And some pretty vintage buttons too! Be sure to check out Liz’s blog to see the buttons I sent her. And check back in for the blog hop May 13!

Mr. Motley Owl showed up while I was in Florida along with 5 other friends. Erin’s line of Simple Truth pendants are so creative and fun.

Check back here on Monday April 23 for a new component challenge/giveaway!

This morning I bought Lori Anderson’s new eBook on Ideas and inspiration for the Creative Blogger.  There have been many times when I’ve thought about how I can battle writer’s block or what can I blog about that people will want to read. This eCourse is a perfect accompaniment to any blogger’s toolbox- the photography throughout is stunning and inspiring and Lori shares 59 pages of a great tips and ideas on keeping an interesting and fabulous blog! I recommend this for any blogger, new or seasoned.
I know I’ll be using these prompts in the near future for my blog posts.

I’m Back!

Hi! I’m back! I am so sorry for the silence around these parts the past few days. I had to jet off to Naples Florida for work but now I’m back.

now….

Don’t PANIC.

I know you are all out of sorts here at the blog…. due to it’s funky new appearance. Unfortunately when I was in Florida my photobucket account expired and therefore my previous blog accoutrements were jeopardized.  So I got home and was just playing around and found these new Blogger templates.

It’s okay if you don’t like it. You know me, I probably won’t keep it for long. But sometimes it’s fun to see something different for a change.  So just try to embrace it for a few days til I decide what I want to do with the blog again. Hey you might just like it after awhile. There is tweaking that I have to do, like figure out where to put the ads. Maybe add a page and a link at the top… this might be the deciding factor to go back to something more traditional.

So Florida… it was nice! The area I stayed in, Naples, was very nice. The weather was beautiful. As soon as I got settled into my room I headed out in search of the beach. I knew I couldn’t be that far…
So I walked down about 3 blocks to Clam Pass Park- I knew there was a beach here somewhere….

This walkway was 6/10 of a mile long and felt like I was walking FOREVER.  There were golf carts going back and forth with beach visitors. At one point, one of the drivers asked me if I was “done walkin’ yet?” I pushed on, knowing it was just around another bend. The vegetation along this whole trail was thick, green, plush and full of spidery things. I walked quickly.

About half way there, I saw this opening in the trees.

Kept on walking.  I finally got to a Gondola type of area with restaurant, and on the otherside was the ocean. Finally!

The water was warm and crystal blue, the sand was stark white. One of the prettiest beaches I’d ever been to! I hung around awhile. Wished I had my suit. There were barely any waves. You could walk out for quite a ways and still be in fairly shallow water.

Now it finally seemed worth the trouble to get there.

On the way back to my hotel, there was an inconspicuous shopping mall. I walked through the Saks store and ended up in an outdoor mall with high end stores like Coach, Louis Vuitton,  Tiffany & Co., and a few normal shops thrown in like the Gap, Anthropologie, and J.Crew. I shopped around for a while. I bought a few tops at J.Crew…. and a journal and this new tote at Anthropologie. It was kind of fun, seeing the recent dresses from Anthro that I included in my last design board.

Wednesday I spent the day at a museum packing up a loaned show that we sent down there. It was a nice day, and the team I worked with were great. We finished it all in one day! I secretly shot a pic of the Chuhuly ceiling. Shhhh. don’t tell.

After a long day of travel, I’m finally back at home and am looking forward to hugging the heck out of my husband later when he returns from Golf, snuggle the Marley girl, and sleep soundly in my own bed tonight!
( I will also be frantically creating a stacked bracelet set for this Saturday’s Wrapped, Stacked & Layered Bracelet Challenge )

Picture HEAVY Bead Fest post

Early Saturday morning I hopped into the Impreza and headed down to Cortland NY to pick up Nancy Schindler. Road trip to Philadelphia P.A. (side note: 2 min. in the car, I realized someone had stolen my GPS system while the car was in our own driveway! SO TICKED!)
We arrived in Philly around 11am and headed straight to the Expo center for the show. We picked up Erin Siegel at the hotel- It was so nice to see her – We finally had the chance to celebrate our book release and it was fun to walk around the show promoting the book. We handed out a bunch of post cards to vendors and friends. The excitement out there for the book is amazing and humbling. While there, I saw that Jean Yates reviewed the book on her blog. I am so grateful – she thinks the book is marvelous- check out her review here.

Ahhh beads. It was a much smaller show than the one in August, but some of the usual suspects were there.  As usual I didn’t take many photos during the show. My camera is acting up so I only had the iPhone for pics. Here are a few random shots…

Primitive Earth Beads– Chain!! This was a great booth- we were there several times over the weekend. And we learned the coolest tutorial on making this leather and rollo chain bracelet- come back later in the week for a post after I make one.

Here’s a shot of the day one goodies… we always have to go back to our hotel room and fondle the beads a bit. More shots of beads as you scroll down…

Saturday night we met a bunch of our blogging and Bead friends at Legal Seafood for dinner.  Diana of Suburban Girl Beads organized the dinner (THANK YOU D!) Diana brought along her husband Colin.  Linda Landig travelled to Bead Fest all the way from Washington state!  Lampworker, Jan Onipenco joined us too! Melinda Orr was there sporting some awesome handmade jewelry she made- I made her take them all off to show me this weekend- She makes the most inspiring things! It was great to see her again! And of course, Nancy, Erin and I were also there to enjoy some seafood. Dinner was amazing.

It was nice to toast all our friends and be in the moment and enjoy each other’s company! We are all looking forward to Bead Fest in August as well with even more bead friends…

And now here is the loot….

Hand of the Hills- I stocked up on my favorite brass and silver spacers/beads and also picked up a few Tibetan amulets and some Saki Silver bronze goodies.

Went to Theodoras Beads for some Czech glass. I think those seafoam green beads in the center are my most favorite beads I bought all weekend long. Got the last 2 strands.

Fiber and Beads– Got some seed beads- glass and copper.

Went a little nuts at the Holy and Pure Gems table-  I don’t know what several of these strands are since nothing was labeled. But regardless, they’re cool.

Also stocked up on more polyester chain- They has some that had bigger links that I hadn’t seen before.

Metalliferous- I picked up some JAX patina for metal sheets, and got another sheet of copper with this pretty floral pattern on it. Anxious to try this!

Stocked up on chain of course from Primitive Earth Beads….

Andrew game me this sweet Fox charm, and I got the bunny from the Green Girl Studios booth along with the pewter pieces below! Excited to finally get some of their new pieces like the wolf charm, and Mermaid link and button….

It was such a pleasure to see Barbara Lewis again. She was teaching enameling classes over the weekend. I popped into her booth and bought some of her enameled gears and beads.

I stumbled onto Heather’s booth- HMB Studios. I didn’t know she was going to be there! I was excited to meet her in person and bought some of her bead sets. Such great colors! She was so welcoming and friendly and I can see we’ll be fast friends- wish we lived closer!

Picked up some lampwork flowers from Susan Sheehan. I have seen her work on Etsy and have admired her flowers for a long time. It was nice to chat with her and introduce myself. I anticipate shopping in her store/booth again soon! I just love her work! She works in wonderful colors.

On Saturday afternoon, we all got together for a bit of a bead swap. I was paired up with Cindy Wimmer. She gave me these lovely lampwork beads (Top: DudaMart) and bottom: Melissa Rediger!
I gave her a baggie of beads with a little bit of everything- polymer, lampwork, ceramic, enameled metal- you name it!

I won a door prize from the talented and fun Staci Louise– This etched copper heart that she embellished with a stamped silver oval and rivets. It’s really cool and double sided! I loved meeting Staci in person for the first time as well. She’s fun and laid back and it will be cool to spend more time with her at the next Bead Fest.

Diana gave us all these fun stickers-  couldn’t have said it better myself! A fun trip all around and I am anxious for the next trip this Summer!

Flap Your Wings Artist Tribute: Judy Glende

When I sat down to create this necklace, soft piano music was playing on my iPod and thoughts of Judy and how she influenced me and so many of my blog friends. We are all so blessed to have known her even for such a short time! She was a strong member of our beading community, and a successful designer- just look at all the publications she was in recently!  I will never forget how we all collectively sent her well wishes and cards as she was going through treatment. We lost not only a wonderful artist, but we lost a wonderful friend.

I have decided to keep this necklace for myself as a token of my appreciation for my friend Judy. Something I can wear and be reminded of all that she meant to so many people. She will always be missed.

THE PARTICIPANTS

On a Roll

I’m on a roll this week! Last night I made a few more pieces for my shop. This first bracelet is a Summery take on the oak leaf focal from Humblebeads.   I knotted glass beads on waxed linen cording, added a fun orange enameled butterfly from Gardanne Beads, and a Squirrel charm from Kylie Parry and finished it off with a vintage button. Oak Tree Oasis!

Here is another take on a necklace design that was featured in Creative Jewelry magazine. Deep teal glass rounds, and matte gray farfalle beads make up the necklace. I wire wrapped a lampwork glass focal (Loupiac), lampwork flower (Gardanne beads) and Pewter bead cap (Green Girl Studios) with some dangling swarovski crystals as the pendant. Finished it off with a bronze toggle from Saki Silver.

And finally the Pod! I have had this pod for a while, from Round Rabbit Extra. I wire wrapped it with brass wire, and dangled some brass chain and attached several of Anne’s enameled butterflies!  As if they are hatching right from this organic pod. Instead of making an elaborate necklace for this focal, I simply used some brown Fairy silk ribbon  for an extra airy and fantasy feel.

These will be available in my jewelry shop momentarily.

Hump Day

I made it through Tuesday. I thank you all for your kind comments and love and support. The tax appt went well. We were nervous about it all day and when we returned from the doctor appt, and talked to the tax preparator, we got great news. So so relieved. Last year was such a nightmare. Unfortunately last years tax lady really screwed up. Glad to know we have a new tax lady and she is wonderful. She may even be able to amend last years taxes. We’ll see what happens.

As for the doctor appt, that went well too. Just some minor tests, an ultrasound, and some bloodwork. The next steps were explained in detail and we are both so happy to know that all of the testing with exception to IVF will be covered under our insurance. So, there is a lot we can try before getting to that major step.  We are feeling hopeful and happy that we have started on this path.  Looking forward to getting some answers, and working around whatever obstacles we can.

Last night yielded some happy jewelry designs- my mood was the best it’s been in quite some time.

A Fun Day Ahead

 2 major appts today.

taxes.
and
the “Fertility Consultation”

Will let ya know how it goes later.

in the meantime. enjoy these 2 newbies from last night.
