Monday March 31

It was literally like Christmas when I came home
from work today to find a nice little package in my
mailbox from Payton Jett. Payton is an extremely
talented lampwork glass and silver artisan. Her shop is called
Green Glass Cafe. You can buy
her pretties here and here.
I cannot wait another minute to
put these babies to work! Off to the studio!

Crazy For You

I was fortunate to be able to travel home this weekend to see my sister Franny in her first high school musical. She played Polly, the lead female role, in Crazy for You, a Gershwin musical comedy. She did a fabulous job and we are so proud of her! We had no idea she had such talent and charisma on-stage! It was a very funny show, and extremely professional!

I hope I don’t get in trouble for posting this. 😉

New work…

TGIF! March 28

Heather Wynn

One of my biggest and best inspirations in the jewelry designing world! If you haven’t gone to her website, go NOW. Kick up your feet and let your eyes be completely tickled by the sight of her nature inspired jewelry and pendant designs. You cannot imagine the joy I felt when I ordered my very first Heather Wynn pendant. And owl of course! I look forward to using it in a special piece for myself. But don’t worry, I’ll order more and then you can have a chance to revel in the beauty of Heather Wynn too.

So I wanted to add a new element to the blog so I am going to start sharing my music inspirations with my readers. I have my little ipod set up to some speakers in my craft room. I tend to listen to the same music over and over, once I get into an artist that I really love. Right now, that music is Iron and Wine. What are you listening to in the studio these days? Leave a comment! I love getting music recommendations! More later today….. stay tuned.

Etsy Artisan Interview: Mincing Mockingbird

I had the excellent opportunity to interview Mincing Mockingbird this week. I know you’ve seen the awesome mini paintings and magnets of every bird species, up close and personal, with hilarious sayings and huge personality. Read on and Enjoy!

1) Tell me as much or as little about yourself as you feel comfortable with… I live in L.A., I read at stoplights, I’m afraid of what I’d do to my smoking, loud-mouthed neighbor if the restraints of society fell away like a curtain. I also like art!
2) What inspires you? I’m inspired by my fiancee. If she likes it, or better yet, if I can make her laugh – golden. I’m more inspired than ever since finding Etsy.com, of making a connection with like-minded people around the world. Around the WORLD! It blows my mind each and every day.

3) How would you describe your craft and style? I paint birds, in a semi-realistic style. I paint in acrylics, mostly, though I also do pyrography (that’s “fancy” for woodburning) and sculpture and altered art. My fiancee just bought a Gocco printer, so I’ll probably be doing that soon.

4) How long have you been creating? Since I was knee high to an ostrich.

5) Is this a job or a hobby? Technically it is a hobby, since I do it at night and on the weekends. L.A.’s a pricey town, and I have a rather nasty Coke habit (Diet Coke, with lime) that I need to feed. So I have a 9 to 5 job. I would love to do art full time and look forward to that day with a feverish kind of rabid frothing.

6) What are your Etsy goals? My Etsy goals are to keep making new and exciting work and to reach out to more and more people. Like I said before, it’s not the money that drives me – it’s receiving feedback like “better than a lapdance” and “disturbing yet essential” that drives me. People that “get it.” I may go through an entire day of human interaction where “Population-thinning super-virus, where art thou?” is my only thought, but I get home and I see someone’s bought a magnet, or a set of books, and they’re from Australia or France or NYC or Texas or London, and that just blows my mind. It’s just the best.

7) What advice do you have for fellow Etsians? Make what you want. Get out of Etc. and get some work done.

Wed. March 26 2008

So, this is how the evening in the studio started out. Marley. Gotta love her, but she sees me in there and immediately feels the need to be in the middle of the action.

Here is a nice portrait of the two of us. She’s not EVEN leavin’!

Don’t think You’re doing jewelry tonight.

Ummm, I don’t think so. Nope. Not leavin’.

Had to boot her. Then the beading started. I was concentrating on the last of the March Art Bead Scene challenges last night. The theme: Celebrate! To honor the 1st birthday of ABS. At first I was thinking that I didn’t really have any celebratory type beads in stock but had forgotten about these awesome lampwork beads that I got from HMB Studios. If you haven’t checked this shop out, DO IT! Great color and cool shapes, and very affordable prices. I paired these beads with my last DorsetHillBeads focal bead, and some different textures of chain and garnet dangles. I re-purposed this chain from previous necklace that I had made.

This bracelet features lampwork glass from Studiorent. Another fabulous glasswork artisan. This bracelet reminds me a little bit of birthday cake. I entered this one into the contest also, calling it Where’s the Cake?

Well time to start my day. Hope your day is sunnier, all I’ve got is rain here! 😦
